Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. Zechariah 9:9
The city was in a fever pitch. Jesus was coming. The one who had taught such lessons of the coming Kingdom, who had healed the sick, restored the blind, and most recently, brought Lazarus back from the dead.
He came as the righteous one who offers salvation. The people desired military conquest, salvation from their Roman overlords. Jesus came riding into Jerusalem as a king who brings peace, a reconciliation with the God of the Covenant. Unknowing of the truest aspect of his arrival, the city went out to meet him, shouting Hosanna and praising the Lord.
Jesus came to bring reconciliation through His death on the cross, one perfect sacrifice making an atonement for the sins of the world. He did so humbly, with purpose, and, most of all, with love for you, for me, and for the entire world. He still comes to us with reconciliation.
Will we miss the purpose of His coming this Easter? Or will we come out to welcome the king with hearts full of wonder?
