12 And Jesus entered the temple and drove out all who sold and bought in the temple, and he overturned the tables of the money-changers and the seats of those who sold pigeons. 13 He said to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer,’ but you make it a den of robbers.” Matthew 21:12-13
The Monday after Palm Sunday, Jesus cursed a fig tree and cleared the temple. Let’s focus on the verse above, where Jesus cleared the temple. When Jesus entered the temple, he turned over the tables and demanded the merchants to leave because they were selling sacrificial animals for excessively high prices. Jesus was very upset about this because the temple was for praying to and worshipping the Lord, not purchasing sacrificial animals. The merchants were standing in the way of true and heartfelt worship.
Prayer and worship are crucial aspects of an individual’s walk with the Lord. As we prepare our hearts for Easter, let us take time to slow down, be in prayer, and remember all that Jesus did for each and every one of us. For it is through Christ’s victory on the cross that He provides us the access to true and proper worship and connection with God.
