The Prodigal: Come Back Home...Forgiven

Written by Rhody Hartman

“When He finally came to his Senses….” Luke 15: 17

Two sons—which of them was the prodigal—the one who went to the far country, or the one who stayed at home but was dissatisfied as he felt cheated because he remained with the father? We often make the decision to “do our own thing”, taking with us the blessings of our Father, but not being wise in our living.

A recent devotional from Our Daily Bread told the story of a man who had a disobedient son who left his home. The father didn’t know where he was, so he put an ad in the paper asking his son to “come back home” because he wanted him to know that he had forgiven him. As the time for him to appear came, the father found many others by the same name who desired forgiveness, as they had “finally come to their senses” and wanted to feel the comfort of a relationship with their father.

The “prodigal” had made unwise decisions and when his money was all gone, he found himself feeding pigs. He was “in the pig pen”, but he finally realized that he was a son of his father and decided to return home where he could at least have something to eat as a servant. His father, however, welcomed him home as his son. The hymn, “The Light of the World is Jesus” draws us to Him.
